Ambulance Emergency Assistant

AMBUTEK is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa – Professional Board for Emergency Care Personnel (HPCSA-PBECP) to conduct Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) training. The college will be running 4 full time courses per annum, with a maximum of 12 students per course.

Admission Requirements

  • Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) certification by an HPCSA accredited training institution
  • Registration with the HPCSA – PBECP as a Basic Ambulance Assistant for a minimum of 6 Months
  • A minimum of 1000 hours of rostered duty work and/or 6 months full time employment with an accredited ambulance service

  • Application fee payable on booking for entrance examinations
  • Balance payable on the first week of the course.

Entry Examination

  • Fee of R350.00
  • 2 Hour Written Paper: BLS Curriculum, ILS Protocols; Multiple choice, Short and Long questions
  • Practical: BLS CPR for Adults, Children and Infants; BLS Patient Simulation

Minimum Entry Requirements:

  • Pass mark for Written Paper is 60%
  • ‘Competent’ grade for BLS CPR
  • ‘Competent’ grade for BLS Patient Simulation

Course Duration

The course is 3 months on a full time basis

  • 7 weeks theory & 7 weeks practical
  • Theory Phase: Monday to Friday 08h00 – 17h00 (Contact Time 270 hours)
  • Practical Phase: 20 x 12 hour shifts and 2 x 8 hour shifts (Contact Time 256 hours)

Course Fees

Full Time Course: ZAR 54,000.00 [R27.000.00 (50%) Non-refundable deposit on being accepted; the remainder would be due by the first day of the course.]

Course Content

  • The AMBUTEK AEA course covers Intermediate Life Support (ILS) theory and practice as prescribed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
  • Great care has been taken to ensure the teaching of up-to-date Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) guidelines as per the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Emergency Medication and Treatment Protocols are as per the latest HPCSA ILS – Practitioner Guidelines.

 

Theory Phase: (Week 1 to week 6)

WEEK 1: Foundations, Human systems, BLS Review, BLS Patient Simulation & OSCE Practice, Basic Life Support For Healthcare Providers

WEEK 2: Human Systems Cont., Pharmacology, IV therapy, Medical emergencies, Patient Simulation & OSCE Practice

WEEK 3: Medical emergencies Cont., Patient Simulation & OSCE Practice

WEEK 4: Trauma emergencies, Paediatric emergencies, Primary health care, Patient Simulation & OSCE Practice

WEEK 5: Mass casualty management, Air ambulance operations, Revision, Patient Simulation & OSCE Practice

WEEK 6: Midterm assessment

Practical Phase: (Week 8 to Week 13)

Students will be required to complete a minimum of 26 experiential learning shifts.

  • 4 Maternity Unit Shifts
  • 6 Emergency Unit/ Primary Health Care Shifts
  • 10 Front Line (Ambulance, Response, Rescue Vehicle) Shifts
